OVC BASEBALL: Belmont blasts EKU

RICHMOND — The Eastern Kentucky University baseball team lost 14-1 to Belmont University in the Ohio Valley Conference series-opener on Friday.

The Bruins (15-6, 3-1 OVC) scored three runs in each of the first two innings. Scott Moses had an RBI single in the first. Judah Akers cleared the bases with a double to left center in the second.

Eastern (5-12, 2-5 OVC) got on the board in the fourth inning. A sacrifice fly by Bryan Soloman made it 6-1 in favor of the visitors.

Belmont added a run in the fifth and the sixth innings, including an RBI single to center by Akers. The Bruins took advantage of five walks in the eighth, including three with the bases loaded, to add six more to their total.

Austin Grisham went 2-for-4 for EKU.  Akers finished 4-for-5 with two runs and five RBIs for the Bruins. Josh Davis went 1-for-1 but scored four times with the help of four walks.

Brent Cobb (2-4) suffered the loss after allowing eight runs on eight hits over five and one-third innings. He walked seven and struck out three. Chase Brookshire (2-1) picked up the win after going six innings and allowing one run on four hits. He struck out five and walked one.

Due to the arrival of inclement weather on Sunday, the teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at noon.
