GOLF: Smith and Pennington champs at the MCC

RICHMOND — On Saturday, at the Madison Country Club, Missy Smith and Nancy Pennington won the Overall Championship in the Annual Patsy Tudor Memorial Golf Tournament. They shot a nice 78 in the nine hole scramble, nine hole true alternate shot event to pick up the win.

The winner of the First Flight was Jan Barnes and Charlotte Tanara with an 80. Second Place honors went to the team of Carolyn Jones and Barbara Belcher with an 87.

The Second Flight winners were Kristen King and Nicole Robertson with an 88.  Coming in Second was the team of Amy Palmer and Kristy Harper with a score of 90.

In the special events, the closest to the pin winners were:  Hole No. 3 — Jan Barnes, Hole No. 6 — Sharon Chambers and hole No. 9 — Kristen King.

Before play started Saturday the players were treated to a tasty breakfast provided by Amy Palmer. Jo Helen Cobb handled the registration. After play was over the players gathered at the newly constructed, scenic, upstairs patio room for presentation of awards, refreshments and a luncheon.

Chairman Jan Barnes presented the awards and then everyone enjoyed a delicious luncheon prepared by Elizabeth Rogers of 1200 @ MCC. It was another fun event at the ole’ fun club in memory of a wonderful lady.

Thanks to the generosity of Jerome Tudor and the great help from you wonderful volunteers. Hats off to all of you!

EKU golfers shine                 in the off season

This summer both the men and the women’s golf teams had team members that did great and came out winners.

Graduating Senior April Emerson, who helped the ladies win their second OVC title this year, won her second Women’s State Amateur Championship. She and Karisa Akin of Tennessee State have     won the last four state amateurs.

For the second straight year no Division I Institution had more Women’s Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholars than the EKU Women’s golf team. Five Colonels made that list. Chosen as 2012-2013 All-American Scholars were seniors April Emerson and Kristen Dorsey, sophomore Nicki Henry and freshmen Rachel Welker and Anna Gleixner..

Men’s golf team members Taylor Riggs and Garrett Hinton won the Kentucky Four-Ball Championship on July 2 at Gibson Bay in Richmond. They fired a 62-64 for a total 126 to nose out Cale Bar and Ben Langley by one stroke.  Congratulations to all you stars on both the ladies and men’s golf team on you accomplishments this summer.

Special thanks to Kevin Britton, Assistant Director of Athletic Public Relations, for keeping me informed.

Funny bone

Since I’m only half Jewish can I join if I only play 9 holes?  Barry Goldwater on being blackballed from a Phoenix golf club.

Last week my golf column stated that Steve Brandenburg won the Berea Invitational Tournament.  Apology to the winner, Randy Osborne, for the booboo.

Steve did win the shootout, however.
