More than 80 Madison Southern football players participated in the second-annual District Challenge Saturday at Pulaski County High School.
The event, which featured five of the six teams in Class 5A District 7, included 7-on-7 passing league games for the skill players, as well as contests for offensive and defensive lineman including, weightlifting, flipping a 200-pound tractor tire and pushing a Somerset EMS ambulance.
Southern coach Jon Clark helped start the competition last year as a way of fostering competition between the district schools and to give players a fun event prior to training camp.
Clark said it also give coaches a chance to evaluate their teams a little bit before camp begins.
“Seven-on-seven passing games don’t show you how good your team is, but this event gives us a chance to watch how cohesive the unit is and lets us see if the team is jelling and if our leaders are leading,” Clark said. “We get to see where we are and it gets the competitiveness going in our guys as well.”
