MADISON COUNTY —
The Madison County Bowling Association’s annual city tournament was held on Feb. 9 and 10 and Feb. 16 and 17.
This is the MCBA’s premier tournament.
All the prize money was awarded on the basis of handicapped scores, except for the all events scratch category. Prize money was awarded on the basis of one position for each eight entries in that event.
Matt Wieczorek recorded the tourney’s top performance with first-place finishes in singles and doubles and a second-place finish in the all events handicapped competition.
Wieczorek took the singles title with a 768 score and earned $170 for his win in that event.
Four other bowlers earned money in singles. Todd Young won $120 for his second-place 767 score, Bill Bowles finished third with a 749 score, which earned him $85, John Hickam won $65 for his fourth-place 748 score and Pete Young took home $60 by placing fifth with a 740 score.
Wieczorek and Todd Young earned $258 by capturing the doubles championship with a 1,449 total.
Second place in doubles and $184 went to Regina Barton and Shawn Barton with a 1,437 score, while Terry Jackson and Jenny Norman took third place and $133 with a score of 1,420.
The quartet of Miranda Reffitt, Narita Rose, Steve Woltering and John Hickam won the team title and $500 with a score of 2,821.
Woltering and Wieczorek placed first and second in the all events handicapped category with scores of 2,156 and 2,054, respectively, winning $38 and $24.
Shawn Barton won the all events scratch competition and $38 with a score of 2,032 and Hickam earned $24 for his second-place score of 2,004.
The tournament’s top money winners were Wieczorek ($323), Todd Young ($249) and Hickam ($214).
Winnings exceeding $100 were earned by Woltering ($149), Shawn Barton ($130), Miranda Reffitt ($125) and Narita Rose ($125).
Although the prize money in this tournament was awarded on the basis of handicapped scores, there were many outstanding scratch scores which are worthy of recognition.
There were five scratch 700 series bowled in the tournament. John Hickam bowled the highest series at 745 and he added a 722 series. Shawn Barton rolled series scores of 724, 722 and 716.
There were 48 600 series bowled by 21 different bowlers. Ten men rolled one or more series scores over 650. This group included Matt Wieczorek (698), Tyler Morgan (692), Todd Young (686), Mark Rogers (681), Brandon Simpson (680), Steve Woltering (675), Bill Bowles (671), Lewis Jones Jr. (666), Ron Gugel (664) and Ronnie Thomas (655).
There was a total of 149 game scores of 200 or higher bowled by 36 individual bowlers. John Hickam rolled 23 200-level games, while Shawn Barton reached that level 15 times.
Brandon Simpson bowled the highest scratch game at 279, followed by Hickam (278), Tyler Morgan (278), Barton (269), Mark Rogers (265), Carl Daniels (265) and Randy Burgess (257).
Scores in the 249 to 245 range were recorded by Glenn Masters, Lewis Jones Jr., Neil Haggard, Wieczorek, David Norman, Woltering and Bill Bowles.
The tournament featured 40 entries in singles, 23 in doubles and 10 in the team event.
MCBA president Harvey Poynter and association manager Lewis Jones Jr. served as the tournament directors.
The prize money was $1,700.
