KIAC HOOPS: Asbury tops Berea, College 102-73

RICHMOND — The Berea College basketball teams had their seasonsz come to an end Saturday in the opening round of the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament.

The Mountaineers suffered a 102-73 loss to Asbury University in Wilmore, while the Lady Mountaineers fell to Indiana University-Southeast, 55-52, at the Seabury Center in Berea.

The Mountaineers (15-16, 7-9 KIAC) trailed by just seven points at halftime, but Asbury used a hot-shooting second half to pull away for a 102-73 win.

The Eagles (19-12) shot 68 percent in the final 20 minutes, including six-of-nine from three-point range, and out-scored Berea 58-36.

The Mountaineers were out-rebounded 46-31 for the game and shot just 39 percent in the second half.

Seth Beckham had a team-best 21 points and five rebounds for Berea, while Tevin Webster added 14 points and four rebounds and Dominique Garmon had 11 points.

The loss was the sixth-straight for the Mountaineers.

Deon Banks added eight points and six rebounds for Berea.

IUSE 55, Berea 52

The Lady Mountaineers had a late lead, but couldn’t hold on for a win over Indiana University-Southeast Saturday in Berea.

Malena Steve had 12 points and six rebounds as the Lady Mountaineers’ suffered a season-ending 55-52 loss.

Berea forced 18 turnovers, out-rebounded IUSE 33-28, but shot just 43 percent for the game. The Lady Grenadiers connected on nine-of-27 three-point attempts and led by as much as 14 points.

Erika Parks had 10 points, Shelby Romine had seven points and seven rebounds, Johnesha Warren had seven assists and six points and Makenzie Stoner added six points.

The game featured two ties and two lead changes.

IUSE shot just 39 percent and got a game-high 19 points from Ashmere Woods.
