H.S. SOFTBALL: Southern moves to 5-0 with road win

RICHMOND — The Lady Eagles stayed undefeated on the season by picking up an impressive road win Thursday in Somerset.

Madison Southern collected 13 hits, did not commit an error and topped Southwestern, 6-1. With the win, the Lady Eagles move to 5-0 on the season.

“If we keep hitting the ball and we play defense like that, we are going to be hard to beat,” Southern coach Brian Foley said.

Junior Tara Bord earned the complete-game victory in the circle, allowing only four hits. Bord was also        3-for-4 at the plate.

Bethany Mays, Alex Nash and Jaycee Combs were all 2-for-4, Kelley Freeman was 2-for-3, Brianna Lanham was 1-for-4 and Morgan Anglin was 1-for-1.

Southern scored twice in the top of the first inning, then added two more runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

Southwestern got its only run in the bottom of the seventh inning.

The Lady Eagles are set to return to action today at home against Jackson County.

Central 14, Vernon Hills (Ill) 4

The Lady Indians pounded out 19 hits and rolled to a five-inning, 14-4 win over Vernon Hills, Ill., on Thursday in Winchester.

Central (3-4) scored three times in the first inning and added four more runs in the second inning to take a commanding lead.

McKenzie Murphy led the offense for the Lady Indians. The sophomore was 4-for-4 with four RBIs and a run scored.

Emily Frakes had a pair of doubles and was 3-for-3 with an RBI and three runs scored. Sydney Vaughn was 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI and three runs scored. Sammie Walczyk was 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Morgan Elliston was 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Mackenzie Wilder was 2-for-3 with an RBI, Audrey Wade had a double and scored a run and Kasi Schneid was 1-for-2 with two RBIs.

Reagan Cole also had an RBI.

Wilder went the distance in the circle, allowing six hits and one earned run, while striking out six.

Central is set to return to action Friday at Rockcastle County.
