Griffen Norris and Devin Vanover once again led the way as the Madison Southern baseball team picked up another win over a Top 25 team.
Norris pitched a complete game and Vanover ripped a three-run home run as the Eagles (2-5) knocked off Harrison County, 4-3, Thursday in the opening game of the McDonald’s Classic in Cynthania.
Southern scored the go-ahead run in the sixth inning when Jacob Dixon scored from third base on a dropped third strike.
“We played solid baseball,” Southern coach Dusty Hon said. “We had a couple of errors, but for the most part we executed well and we are just tickled to death to get a win up there.”
The win certainly was special for the Hon.
The Southern coach graduated from Harrison County in 1988 and played for legendary coach Mac Whitaker.
Earlier this month, Norris and Vanover played a big role in Southern’s victory over Boyle County, another Top 25 team. Norris pitched a complete game and Vanover delivered a walk-off, game-winning double in a 1-0 win.
Norris had five strikeouts in the win over Harrison County.
“Every time he pitches, we feel like we have a chance to win,” Hon said.
Southern trailed 2-0 before Vanover homered in the fifth. Harrison County tied it in the bottom of the inning before the Eagles pushed across the winning run in the sixth.
Jonothan Ross was walked twice intentionally and had a single. Conner Buchanan had two doubles, Dixon had a double and John Meeks had a single.
Southern continues play in the tournament Saturday morning against Boone County in Cynthania.
