Rutherford medals in Senior Games

RICHMOND — Jack Rutherford of Richmond brought home two medals in badminton from the 2013 National Senior Games held this week in Cleveland.

Rutherford defeated four of his six opponents to win a bronze medal in singles competition in the Men’s 60-64 age division.

He teamed with partner Michael Fabritius of Danville to win four-of-five matches, good enough for a silve medal.

This was the third senior olympics for Rutherford, who won silver in tennis singles at the 2007 games in Louisville and gold in tennis singles in the 2009 games in San Francisco.

More than 10,000 athletes from the United States and 10 other countries participated in the Cleveland games which finish up Aug. 1, in 22 sports.

The National Games are held every two year. To qualify, athletes must place in the top three in their respective state games which are held during the year preceding the national games.
