H.S. TENNIS: Patriots shine on first day of 11th Region Tournament

RICHMOND — The opening day of the 11th Region Tournament was an overwhelming success for the Model Laboratory boys tennis team.

The Patriots had both their singles players and both their doubles teams move into the quarterfinals Tuesday at Shillito Park.

After the first two rounds, Model has eight points and is tied for first place with Henry Clay.

“The guys continue to reach new heights,” Model coach Ric Hernandez said. “First they all get seeded in the regional draw, now they all come back for the second day and quarterfinal matches. These feats have never happened on my watch. I’m proud of their accomplishments already and excited to see what the next few days bring.”

Gus Benson, the tournament’s No. 1 seed, got an opening-round bye, then rolled past Wade Bailey of Dunbar, 6-0, 6-0.

Cole Wilson, the No. 6 seed, defeated William Farish of Sayre, 6-3, 7-6 (6), then hammered Anton Verlander of Bryan Station, 6-0, 6-0.

Model’s doubles team didn’t drop a set on Tuesday.

James Logue and Jack Frisbie, the No. 5 seed, beat Madison Central’s Morgan Regal and Jimmy Curry, 6-0, 6-0, then beat a team from Woodford County, 6-1, 6-0.

Blake Benson and Nolan Kelly, the No. 6 seed, defeated Madison Central’s Derek Durham and Zack Owsley, 6-0, 6-2, then defeated a team from Sayre, 6-1, 6-2.

The quarterfinals are set for 3 p.m. today at Shillito Park and LCA.

Madison Central’s David Culotta picked up a three-set win in the opening round. He lost the first set, won the second, then took the final-set tiebreaker to clinch a 3-6, 7-6 (8-6) 10-5 win.

Culotta fell in the second round to the No. 2 seed, Ryo Takeda of Henry Clay, 6-1, 6-0.

Central’s other singles player, Lucas Glass lost to Ben Armbruster of Lafayette, 6-3, 7-6 (3).

Madison Central had one girls doubles team advance to the second round. Molly Ford and Shannon Kelly picked up a 6-3, 6-4 win, then fell to a team from Henry Clay, 6-3, 6-3, in the second round.

Kayla Klevinger and Meredith Odell lost in the first round, 6-1, 6-0.

In the singles, Madison Central’s Lizz Walker lost 6-0, 6-0 in the opening round and Cassidy Justice fell in her first match, 6-0, 6-0.
