KIAC BASKETBALL: Mountaineers fall in overtime, 69-67, at Brescia

RICHMOND — The Mountaineers took a late lead, but couldn’t hold on for a win over Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rival Brescia Saturday in Owensboro.

Seth Beckham had 24 points as Berea College suffered a 69-67 overtime loss. The Mountaineers (15-9, 6-3 KIAC) have lost three of their past four games.

Berea College jumped out to a 6-0 lead, then Brescia (8-16, 3-8 KIAC) used a 9-1 run to control. The Bearcats had a 31-28 halftime lead and pushed their advantage to a game-high eight points (40-32) with 14:45 left in the second half.

The Mountaineers took a 59-57 lead late only to see Brescia tie the game seconds later. Berea’s Aaron Ponder had a look at a game-winning shot at the buzzer, but it wouldn’t fall.

In overtime, Berea grabbed a 67-64 lead, but the game was tied in the final seconds. Brescia’s Jermain Langley drove to the basket for the game-winning layup with 0.8 seconds left.

Berea is set to return to action Tuesday at home against Asbury.

Berea 65, Brescia 52

The Lady Mountaineers continued their strong late-season surge with a 65-52 win Saturday on the road over KIAC rival Brescia.

Johnesha Warren had 14 points as Berea improved to 9-14 overall and 5-5 in the conference. The Lady Mountaineers have won three straight and five of their past six games.

Berea had a 16-11 lead and went into the half with a 31-19 advantage. With 5:29 left in the second half, the Lady Mountaineers had a 52-39 lead.

Berea dropped its first four KIAC games, but has won five of six league games.

Berea is set to return to action Tuesday at home against Asbury.
