H.S. SOFTBALL: Model falls 1-0 to LCA in All “A”

RICHMOND — The Model Laboratory Lady Patriots lost a heartbreaker 1-0 to Lexington Christian Academy in the championship game of the 11th Region All “A” Classic Saturday.

LCA got the game’s only run in the fourth inning, collecting the only two hits they had all day against Model starter Grace Weitkamp. Weitkamp also struck out three batters in the game.

Model had the tying run on base in the seventh inning but was not able to score when the runner was thrown out at the plate on a close play.

“We had a runner at third at the end but I got her thrown out going to the plate,” Model Coach Bobby Huff. “I am an aggressive coach and I want my players to play that way as well. We played well, but today just wasn’t our day.”

Model outhit the Lady Eagles 5-2 and could easily have had more. Three times in the game, Lady Patriot batters hit screaming line drives right at LCA infielders. And all three times, they resulted in double plays as runners were doubled up on the plays.

“I’ve never seen so many line-drive double plays in my life,” Huff said. “But, you’ve got to give them credit for knowing where the base runners were and paying attention and making the plays.”

Junior shortstop Hayley Hunt led the way at the plate for Model with a pair of singles in the game. Kayla Huff, Anastasia Henderson and Lindsey Noland also had one single each.

Though disappointed in the loss, Huff said he was pleased with the improvement his team has shown in the first three weeks of the season.

“I’m very proud of them. They are really coming along,” he said. “If you look at where they were a couple of weeks ago and where they are now, there’s no comparison. I think they can be a very dangerous little club by the end of the season.”

The Lady Patriots are back in action on Monday when they host Berea Community.
