RICHMOND — The Eastern Kentucky University women’s golf team has a two shot lead after the first round of the 2014 Colonel Classic.

 The teams played only one round on Friday and will play just one round on Saturday. Saturday’s final round will begin with a shotgun start at 10 a.m. The 12-team event is being held at the par-72, 5,838-yard Arlington Golf Club.

The Colonels shot an opening round 313, two shots better than Xavier’s 315. Morehead State (317) is third and USC Upstate (322) is fourth.

Freshman Sofie Levin led EKU with an opening round 77. She is tied for third overall. Anna Gleixner is tied for fifth after a first round 78. Emilie Simmons and Rachel Welker shot rounds of 79 and are tied for 12th.

Malika Allie of USC Upstate and Rachel Thompson of Marshall are the individual leaders after posting rounds of 76. Vanessa Bognot (77) of Morehead  State and Levin are one shot back. Seven more players are within two shots of the lead.

EKU football team to hold                       5K walk/run for Haiti

The Eastern Kentucky University football program is sponsoring a ‘5K Walk/Run for Haiti’ Saturday, April 26. All proceeds from the event will be used to help fund EKU football’s upcoming mission trip to assist the Hands & Feet Project in Jacmel, Haiti.

EKU head football coach Dean Hood and select players are scheduled to travel to Haiti in May to help build new facilities for the Hands & Feet Project’s orphanage. The orphanage, which originally started with only 5-10 kids, now has more than 100.

Registration will take place at the Ashland Lot at EKU April 26 at 9 a.m., with the race beginning at 10 a.m. The cost is $20 per person.
