GOLF: Hamrick takes title

RICHMOND — Richmond’s Mason Hamrick took first place in his age group in the Kentucky PGA Jr. Tour event Wednesday at Weissinger Golf Club in Shelbyville.

Hamrick shot a +9, 45, and easily beat out the competition in the boys 10 and under division. Maxwell Bewley of Bowling Green finished five shots back from Hamrick, while Braxton Massengale of Albany finished six strokes back of the winner.

Richmond’s Lucas Barrett also competed in the event. He finished fifth in the boys 8 and under division after shooting a +7, 31.

Barrett finished just six strokes behind the division winner, Michael Long of Shelbyville.

Skipworth in contention

Richmond’s Carter Skipworth shot a +7, 77, Wednesday during the opening round of the Natural Resource Partners Bluegrass Junior at Bellefonte Country Club in Ashland.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the event is a 54-hole stroke play competition. The meet features 108 boys and 36 girls, ages 12-18, from 23 states. The boys division is playing the course at 6,009 yards, while the girls division is playing the course at 5,564 yards.

After the opening round, Austen Swentzel of Nicholasville and Patrick Martin of Birmingham, Ala.

Defending champion Haylee Harford of Leavittsburg, Ohio, leads the Girls Division after posting 71.
