OVC HOOPS: Colonels claim championship of Comfort Suites Invitational; Cosey honored

RICHMOND — The Colonels claimed the championship of the EKU Comfort Suites Invitational over the weekend by going 4-0 in the tournament which featured five teams playing nine games over a span of six days.

EKU had victories over Cincinnati Christian, Kennesaw State, Towson  and Radford.

Towson finished runner-up with a 3-1 record — the only loss was a 71-69 in OT to the Colonels.

EKU’s Glenn Cosey was named 2012 Comfort Suites Invitational MVP after averaging 18.8 points 2.7 assists and 2.3 steals in four games. He shot 54.5 percent from the field and 50 percent from behind the three-point arc. Cosey scored 20 or more points three times — 20 against Cincinnati Christian; 21 against Kennesaw State and 20 against Radford.

Senior Mike DiNunno joined Cosey on the All-Invitational first team.

DiNunno scored in double figures three times — 10 against Cincinnati Christian; 17 against Towson and 19 to help EKU overcome a 16-point first-half deficit in the Colonel’s win over Radford on Sunday.  

Joining Cosey and DiNunno on the first team were Javonte Green of Radford; Markeith Cummings of Kennesaw State and Jerrelle Benimon of Towson.

EKU’s Deverin Muff was named to the All-Invitational second team. Muff scored 29 points, grabbed 13 rebounds and blocked two shots in the Colonels’ four wins. He hit four consecutive free throws — the final two with 1.4 seconds to go — in the Colonels’ overtime win against Towson Saturday.

Joining Muff on the second team were Radford’s Ya Ya Anderson; Towson’s Marcus Damas and Bilal Dixon and D.J. McCommons of Cincinnati Christian.

Cosey OVC newcomer of the Week

Cosey, the junior transfer from Columbus State Community College was named the Ohio Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week Monday for his performance in the Colonels’ three games last week.

Cosey averaged 18.3 points, 3.0 assist, 2.7 steals and 2 rebounds in EKU’s three wins during the week. He hit 17-of-35 — 48.6 percent — from the field, 6-of-17 — 35.3 percent — from three-point range and 15-of-19 — 78.9 percent from the free throw stripe in the three games.

Cosey currently ranks third in the OVC in scoring, averaging 18.8 points per game, and fourth in 3-pointers made in a game, averaging 3 per game.
