OVC BASEBALL: EKU rolls to fourth-straight OVC victory

RICHMOND — The Colonels continued their offensive onslaught against Ohio Valley Conference opponents Saturday at Turkey Hughes Field in Richmond.

EKU pounded out 30 hits, scored in every inning and took the opening game of a three-game series with UT-Martin (9-24, 2-14 OVC), 30-4. The Colonels batted around in the second, third, fourth, fifth and eighth innings.

EKU (10-20, 6-7 OVC) has won four-straight conference games and has out-scored its opponents 83-28 during that stretch. On Sunday, the Colonels defeated Morehead State 30-14.

EKU has scored 10 or more runs in four of its past six games.

Junior catcher Sean Hagen finished 5-for-7 with seven RBI and two runs scored. Freshman Doug Teegarden had five hits in six at bats, scored  four times and drove in three runs.

EKU broke a 1-1 tie with five runs in the bottom of the second, then added five more in the third and fourth.

Kenny Hostrander  had a two-run single in the second. Bryan Soloman had a bases-clearing double down the left field line in the third inning.

After UTM retired the first two batters of the fourth, six straight Colonels reached base, including three on doubles. Shaun Ball followed back-to-back doubles by Hagen and Soloman with a rocket two-run shot over the right field fence for a 16-1 lead.

It was Ball’s team-leading seventh home run of the season.

Three more runners came home in the fifth to extend the lead to 19-1.

The Skyhawks (9-24, 2-14 OVC) stopped the bleeding with three runs in the top of the sixth. Hagen Nelson had a 2-run single. However, EKU answered  right back with three in the bottom half of the inning off a bases loaded double by Hagen.

Soloman added a solo home run in the eighth, his second of the season, to extended the advantage to 25-4. Later in the inning, freshman Luke  Wurzelbacher hit a grand slam, his second homer of the season.

Soloman went 4-for-7 with five RBI and three runs scored. Hostrander finished 4-for-6 with four runs and three driven in.

Brent Cobb (3-5) started and earned the win after allowing four runs on five hits in six innings. He walked one and struck out one. Dan Tobik  (1-5) suffered the loss after making it through just 1 1/3 innings. He allowed six runs on five hits and walked two. UT Martin used a total of seven pitchers.

The Colonels and Skyhawks will continue their series with a game at 2 p.m. today.
