Local boxers training for championships

RICHMOND — Several boxers from Igo’s Boxing and Fitness Center in Richmond have been busy training to compete for a shot at the 2013 Bobby Hughes National Championships, which are schedule for July 17 through 20, in Johnson City, Tennessee.

The event, in its ninth-year, has grown from a local amateur boxing show to a national championship with two rings for nonstop boxing entertainment.

On June 22, Richmond’s Kegan Kavanaugh (110 pounds, junior division) and Gentry Deck (80 pounds, junior division) competed for the home crowd at Igo’s Boxing & Fitness Gym’s Amateur Boxing Show.

Kavanaugh won his bout by decision, while Deck lost his bout by a 2-1 decision.

This past Saturday, members of Igo’s Boxing Club traveled to Zanesville, Ohio to compete in the Spirit of Freedom—Saturday Night Fights. Anthony Martin (141 pounds, open division) and Thomas Deck (65 pounds junior division) both competed and won the championship by unanimous decision in their respective divisions.

Igo’s Boxing Club is a non-profit organization run by Coach Emmitt Igo, a lifelong Richmond native, whose goal is to teach the art of boxing and fitness in a fun, safe, and energetic atmosphere, while accomplishing one’s personal fitness objective at any age.

Amateur boxing shows are held at Igo’s Boxing and Fitness Center periodically and are open to the public.
