BASEBALL: Richmond National and American All-Stars pick up wins

RICHMOND — The Richmond National All-Stars put on another impressive offensive display Tuesday during 11-12 year-old District 3 Tournament action at Lake Reba.

Richmond National hit four home runs and rolled to a 14-2 four-inning win over Winchester. Cameron Craig hit two homers — a solo shot and a three-run blast — as Richmond improved to 2-0 in pool play.

Matthew McQuain and Stephen Golson also hit home runs.

Through the first two games of the tournament, the Richmond National All-Stars have out-scored their opponents 19-5 and have scored in eight of the nine innings they have played. They also have hit nine home runs in the two lopsided victories.

Richmond National did not score in the first inning against Winchester, but then scored twice in the second and eight more times in the third. The All-Stars added four more runs in the fourth.

In the second, Clay Combs doubled and scored on a single by Devin Ecklar. Craig added a solo home run to put Richmond National up 2-0.

In the third, Ethan Hahn reached on a bunt single, Ben Snapp and McQuain followed with a three-run home run. Golson hit a solo home run and Snapp had a three-run double as Richmond National got seven hits, a walk and three hit batters in the inning.

In the fourth, Craig ripped a three-run homer and Hahn had an RBI single.

Snapp started and went 2 2/3rd innings. Combs pitched one inning and Ecklar pitched the final 1/3rd of an inning.

Richmond National is set to wrap up pool play at 8 p.m. today against Eastern National at Revel Field.

11-12 Richmond American

The Richmond American 12-year-old All-Stars rebounded from a tough first-round loss Saturday to pick up a 10-6 victory over Harrison County Tuesday.

Luke Keck pitched four innings, allowing four runs — three earned — to pick up the win. Lincoln Lundsford pitched 2/3 of an inning and gave up one unearned run. Alex Lazeroth pitched the final 1 1/3 inning and gave up one unearned run in picking up the save.

Richmond jumped out to a quick 3-0 first-inning lead. Lundsford drove in Tyler Santiago and Lazaroff for the first two runs, then scored the third run on a wild pitch.

Harrison County picked up a run in the bottom of the first, then took the lead at 4-3 on the strength of a three-run homer in the second.

But Richmond bounced right back to retake the lead in the third inning.

Catcher Bennie Hurt doubled to left field scoring Lunsdford who had reached base after a strikeout to tie it at 4-4.

John Bingham then brought Lazaroff, who was pinch running for Lundsford, home with a line drive single to put Richmond on top 5-4.

Richmond extended its lead in the fourth inning.

After Lucas Myers reached on an infield single, Kenton Humphrey lined a pitch over the right field fence for a two run homer to make it 7-4.

Lundsford reached on an error and scored on a double to right by Hurt to make it 8-4, then Caeden Layton brought Hurt home with a single to left to give Richmond a 9-4 lead.

Richmond added a run in the fifth to go up 10-4. Harrison County got one run in the fifth and one in the sixth to round out the scoring at 10-6.

Hurt led the way at the plate with a pair of doubles and 2 RBI, while Humphrey had the homer and 2 RBI, Layton had a pair of singles and an RBI, Lundsford had a single and 2 RBI, Bingham had a single and an RBI and Meyers picked up a single.

Richmond American is back in action today at 6 p.m. against Anderson County.
