H.S. SWIMMING: Madison County swimmers set for state meet

RICHMOND — Student-athletes from Madison Central and Model and Madison Central are set to compete at 2013 Pannel Swim Shop KHSAA Swimming & Diving Championship in Louisville.

The preliminaries are scheduled for today, with the finals in most events set for Saturday.

A total of 10 Madison County swimmers qualified for individual events, while eight relay teams also earned the chance to compete for a state title.

Four Madison Central swimmers qualified for two individual events.

Chase Baldwin should be a strong contender to challenge for a title in two events. He enters the state meet with the fifth-best qualifying time in the 100 back and the sixth-best time in the 200 IM.

Morgan Lakes has top-10 qualifying times in both the 200 IM (ninth) and 500 free (10th).

Senior Caroline Smith is set to compete in the 100 free (17th-best time) and the 200 free (18th-best time).

Junior Molly Ford posted top-20 qualifying times at the regional meet in two events — 100 free (20th) and the 50 free (21st).

Other Central swimmers set to compete in the preliminaries include: Abigail Thompson (100 back), Tilly Baldwin (500 free), Trent Lakes (500 free) and Madeline Meeker (200 IM).

Model had two male swimmers qualify for individual events — James Schwartz (500 free) and Jonas Welsing (50 free).

Model had five relay teams earn spots at the state meet — 200 free boys (17th-best qualifying time), 400 free boys (18th), 200 medley boys (27th), 400 free girls (31st) and 200 medley girls (32nd).

Central had three relay teams earn spots at the state meet — 200 free girls (ninth-best qualifying time), 400 free girls (16th) and 200 medley girls (19th).
