H.S. TENNIS: Model falls to Trinity

RICHMOND — The Model Laboratory tennis team came up just short of knocking off perennial state powerhouse Trinity earlier this season in a tournament in Louisville.

The Patriots got another shot at the Shamrocks on Thursday at EKU.

The match came down to a third-set tiebreaker at No. 2 doubles and Trinity once again claimed a hard-fought victory. The Shamrocks won two of the three singles matches and claimed a 3-2 victory.

“We are getting there,” Model senior Jack Frisbie said. “Trinity is one of the best teams in the state. It’s good to compete against those kind of teams.”

This was the first time Trinity had come to Richmond to face Model.

The Patriots got an easy win from Gus Benson at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-1, over Mustafa Gardezi. At No. 1 doubles, Frisbie and James Logue defeated Tommy McConville and Sam Rueff, 2-6, 7-5, 1-0 (5).

Cole Wilson fell at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-0, and Nate Frisbie lost at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 6-1.

At No. 2 doubles, Blake Benson and Nolan Kelly took on Austin Strause and Scott Lee. Model took the first set, 7-5, before the Shamrocks rallied in the second set, 6-4.

Strause and Lee claimed the third-set tiebreaker, 10-8.

“This is a great measure on how far we've come,” Model coach Ric Hernandez said. “We did not compete well against them (the first time). Today they inserted one of their top players that has been injured back into the lineup. It made them better.”

On Tuesday, the Patriots rolled to a 5-0 win over Lafayette in Lexington.

In singles, Benson defeated Nathan Gillespie, 6-1, 6-0, and James Logue defeated Ethan Sander, 6-1, 6-0.

In doubles action, Kelly and Blake Benson beat Jonathan Griggs and Alex Money, 6-3, 6-1. Jack Frisbie and Cole Wilson beat Sam Sawayze and Rylan Toland, 6-0, 6-3 and Nate Frisbie and Taylor Gentry defeated Steven Armbruster and Connor Evans, 6-2, 2-6, 1-0 (9).

“Lafayette is a young and talented team,” Hernandez said.  “If we would not have brought our A game, the matches would have been much closer.”

The Patriots are set to return to action Saturday at EKU in the Model Invitational. The event features Model, Covington Catholic and South Oldham.
