H.S. TENNIS: Benson falls in quarters

LEXINGTON — Gus Benson gave the No. 1 seed a battle, but couldn’t pull off an upset Friday in the quarterfinals of the KHSAA State Tennis Tournament.

The Model Laboratory junior fell to Sean Donohue of St. Xavier, 7-5, 6-3, at the University of the Kentucky.

Earlier in the day, Benson (the No. 5 seed) set up a showdown with the top seed with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Tanner Love of Trinity.

Donohue will face Austin Hussey of Covington Catholic, the No. 3 seed, in today’s semifinal match.

Benson was making his third-straight appearance in the state singles tournament. The junior had lost in the Round of 16 each of the past two seasons.

This year, he rolled through his two matches on Thursday, beating Jake Estep of Lawrence County, 6-1, 6-0, before beating Conner Maquet of Corbin, 6-1, 6-1.

In his first three matches, Donohue dropped just two games. But the top seed got a battle from Benson.

“A few key points and there could have been a different result,” Model coach Ric Hernandez said.

Despite the loss, Benson earned All-State honors.

The junior won the 11th Region singles title last week in Lexington. He dropped just 10 games in four matches and wrapped up the title with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Ryo Takeda of Henry Clay in the championship match.
