H.S. TENNIS: Model’s top singles player rolls into regional semifinals

RICHMOND — The Patriots were in good position to make a run at a team championship after the first day of the 11th Region Tournament at Shillito Park.

But, Model’s chance at a title slipped away Wednesday.

Both of the Patriots doubles teams fell in the quarterfinals and Cole Wilson also was eliminated.

Gus Benson, the No. 1 seed in the tournament, won his quarterfinal match and will play a semifinal match today.

“It’s such a bittersweet moment for the team and I,” Model coach Ric Hernandez said. “We are so disappointed that we didn’t bring home the team championship, but at the same time we are very happy that Gus is still in the hunt for the singles championship and gets to represent Model tennis in the state tournament!”

Benson defeated Lexington Catholic’s Matthew Ko 6-2, 6-1. Model’s top singles player was set to take on Henry Clay’s Alex Dubilier in the semifinals, but the match was pushed back to today because of rain.

With a win over Dubilier, Benson will clinch a runner-up finish for the Patriots.

The championship singles match is also scheduled for today at Lexington Christian Academy.

Cole Wilson picked up two wins on Tuesday, but lost 6-0, 6-0 Wednesday to Woodford County’s Luke Yeast.

Blake Benson and Nolan Kelly fell to Lafayette’s Gillespie and Harris, 6-2, 6-2.

Model’s chances at a team title ended when Jack Frisbie and James Logue lost to Henry Clay’s Hughes and Yurkoski. The Patriots’ top doubles team fell in a third-set tiebreaker, 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 (6).

With that win Henry Clay locked up the championship. The Blue Devils have 12 points, Model has nine points.
