H.S. SOFTBALL: Lady Eagles beat South Laurel, 9-6

RICHMOND — The Madison Southern softball team picked up a big 9-5 road win Tuesday over South Laurel in London.

The win, the third in a row for the Lady Eagles (18-7), was their eighth in the past 10 games.

Southern jumped out on top of the Lady Cardinals early, scoring six runs in the first inning off five base hits.

The added another run in the third to go up 7-0.

“We hit the ball better the first three innings tonight than we have all year,” Southern coach Brian Foley said.

The Southern bats cooled a little after that, but pitcher Tara Bord, pitching for the first time in eight days, held the Lady Cardinals at bay until the fifth inning.

South Laurel scored four runs in the fifth off some of what Foley said were “questionable calls”, then picked up another in the sixth to cut the Southern lead to 7-5.

The Lady Eagles put the game away with two runs in the seventh inning on a two-run homer by Bord.

Foley said he felt like his team lost some of its spark after it got the big lead and let South get back in the game.

“The game should not have been that close. We scored six in the first and I think we got a little complacent and just went up and swung the bat and lost some concentration,” Foley said. “Tara did a good job in the circle. I think the rest did her a lot of good, she pitched well tonight and we hit the ball well, especially early.”

Bord led the way at the plate also going 3-for-4 with two singles and the home run. Bethany Mays also was 3-for-4 at the plate, with three singles.

Alex Nash had two singles, Jacey Combs had a double and Briana Lanham added a single.

Southern will be back in action at Model today, weather permitting.

Southwestern 10, Model 0

The Lady Patriots dropped a 10-0 decision to Southwestern Tuesday in Somerset.
