OVC BASEBALL: EKU splits pair with Govs

Special to the Register

RICHMOND — Brent Cobb and Sean Hagen led the Eastern Kentucky University baseball team to a 2-1 victory in the first game of an Ohio Valley Conference doubleheader Friday against Austin Peay at Turkey Hughes Field.

The Governors won game two, 10-8.

The final game of the three-game, weekend series is set for noon today in Richmond.

Despite losing the second game, EKU (15-25, 11-9 OVC) has won nine of its past 11 Ohio Valley Conference games.

Both teams scored a run in the fifth inning of the first game and that’s the way it stayed until the bottom of the ninth.

Bryan Soloman led-off with a single through the right side. Demetrius Moorer came on to run and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Moorer then moved to third on a fielder’s choice.

With two outs, Hagen singled up the middle, just out of the reach of the diving  Governor shortstop, to score the game-winning run.

Brent Cobb started for EKU and allowed one run on just four hits in eight innings. He walked two, struck out three and retired the final 10 batters he faced. Myles Scott (2-1) earned the win after pitching one inning of hitless and scoreless relief.

Hagen had four of the team’s seven hits, going 4-for-5 with two RBI. Three other Colonels had one hit each.

APSU drew first blood in game two as well, taking a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI double by Craig Massoni.

Just like in game one, EKU answered  in its half of the inning. Shaun Ball’s two-out single to left scored Doug Teegarden from second base to tie the game.

The Governors took a 3-1 lead in the second.

The Colonels brought the tying run to the plate with one out in the bottom  of the ninth. With two outs, Austin Grisham kept EKU alive with an RBI single to left field.

Massoni went 3-for-5 with three runs and three RBIs in game two. Kenny Hostrander had three hits in four at bats and scored twice for EKU. Hagen was 2-for-5 with a run and an RBI.
