Lady Indians, Clark County battle to tie

RICHMOND — One game after scoring 10 goals against Berea, Madison Central was lucky to escape with a 1-1 tie Wednesday against George Rogers Clark in Richmond.

The Lady Indians looked lethargic from the start and for the most part were outplayed by the Lady Cardinals for much of the first half.

Central wasted several scoring opportunities in the game’s first 20 minutes, then allowed GRC to score on a breakaway goal by Kyra Parido with less than three minutes to go in the half.

“We definitely came out asleep or something to start the game. I think they finally woke up late in the half, but it was almost too late because they had to kind of work themselves back into the game,” Central coach Chris Dunham said. “The game should have been put away in the first half. We had a lot of wasted opportunities on goal and it needs to be put away earlier than that.”

But after falling behind 1-0 at the half, the Lady Indians finally showed some signs life in the second half and got on the board at the 22:46 mark when Maryssa Stewart took a pass over the Clark defense and fired a shot past the Clark goal keeper.

But other than that, there wasn’t a lot of offense from the Lady Indians, who managed only 11 shots on the night, six on goal, most of which came early in the game.

Dunham said some selfishness by some of his players contributed to the ragged play.

“Some of my girls are trying to do too much instead of working together,” Dunham said. “They forgot what their roles were and were trying to do too much on their own, or they wanted to get down the field as fast as possible instead of waiting and passing and leading somebody.”

The Lady Indians have a few days to work out some of the kinks, Dunham said, before they hit the road next week for games at Boyle County and Model.

“We have to work on the speed of the game. We had too much time with the ball at our feet tonight. We’ve got to have more touches on the ball instead of dribbling and waiting for something to happen. It was an off night for us, but that’s the way games go sometimes.”
