BOWLING: New season rolls into action

RICHMOND — The 2013-14 bowling season is officially underway at Galaxy as the Early Birds women’s league opened its season on Wednesday.

The summer 2013 season concluded on Monday with the completion of the season for the Summer Cash Money League.

Details are included in the league highlights.

League highlights

Summer Cash Money League

The Under Achievers (Levi Burns, Sam Spangler, Vince Townsend and T.J. Tudor) finished on top with 31 wins as this non-sanctioned league finished its season on Monday.

Bowl Jobs (Turner Curtis, Raymond White, J.J. Reisig and Ollie Gasser) fell just short of winning the title with 30 wins, while third place went to Champion’s Sports Bar (Steve Dalton, Russell Jones, Tyler Harris and Brandon Simpson) with 28 wins.

Ollie Gasser with a 243 game and 644 series and Brandon Simpson with a 226 game and 639 series led the league’s members on the last night. Tyler Harris rolled a 635 series.

High scores were also bowled by two substitutes. Todd Young bowled a 258 game and 678 series, while a 236 game and 656 series were rolled by John Hickam.

The best averages for the season were compiled by Ollie Gasser (186), Steve McKnight (179), Tyler Harris (177), T. J. Tudor (174) and J.J. Reisig (171).

Gasser also bowled the top series (644), followed by Harris (635), McKnight (629), Reisig (609) and Russell Jones (607).

Gasser completed his sweep of the “triple crown” by rolling the highest game at 243. The next-best games were 242 by Russell Truesdale, 241 by McKnight, 233 by Harris and 227 by Vince Townsend.

Harris captured the most improved honor.

Early Birds

Karen Kensicki and Sue Hegelmeyer each bowled a 169 game to lead this league on the opening day on Wednesday morning. Beverly Shearer rolled the next-best game at 164.

Kensicki (473) and Hegelmeyer (465) also bowled the best series scores.

Splits were converted by Beverly Brassfield (2-7) and Gail Campbell (3-10).

Other leagues starting soon

The Galaxy Girls League will open play at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Five other leagues will start their seasons during the following week.

The Arlington women’s league will open at 9:30 a.m. Sept. 3. The Wednesday Wonders will start Sept. 4, the Classic Doubles on Sept. 5 and the TGIF and Friday Night Mixed leagues will open on Sept. 6. The latter four leagues will have an organizational meeting at 6 p.m. on the opening night followed by the first session of competition.

All 10 Galaxy leagues will be in action during the following week.
