The Lady Pirates got two goals from senior Taylor Powell, but it wasn’t enough, as Garrard County downed Berea Community 3-2 in the season opener for both teams.
Berea jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on Powell’s first goal and could have been up even more, but the Lady Pirates couldn’t capitalize on several close shots inside the game’s first 15 minutes.
That allowed the Golden Lions to stay in the game and eventually tie it just before the half.
After intermission, Garrard County came out the aggressor, and took a 3-1 lead with two goals in the first 15 minutes of the second half.
Berea cut the lead to 3-2 on Powell’s second goal on an assist from Izzy Whatley with 15:45 to go.
But, the Lady Pirates could get no closer.
Berea outshot Garrard in the first half 10-8, but the Golden Lions got off 15 shots on goal in the second half to Berea’s seven.
“The first 15 minutes we had a lot of good shots and at least four that were right point-bland at the freshman goalie,” Bingham said. “If we just put two of those in, her confidence would have gone down. But the longer we allowed them to stay close, the more confidence they gained and ultimately I think that is what hurt us.”
The Lady Pirates don’t have much time to think about the loss as they travel to Bath County for a 6 p.m. contest today.
Madison Central 4 Montgomery County 0
The Lady Indians picked up a 4-0 season-opening win over Montgomery County in Mt. Sterling on Monday.
Emily Willoughby provided all the offense Central needed on the night with two first-half goals to give the Lady Indians a 2-0 at the intermission.
While the Central defense was dominating on one end, the offense continued its good play as well, as sophomore Haleigh Cable and senior Maryssa Stewart added a goal apiece in the second half.
“We dominated possession a lot. Everybody played their roles the way we’ve been practicing, so everything came together really well tonight,” Central coach Chris Dunham said. “We gave Montgomery County a hard time and they didn’t really get that many chances on goal. We really dominated a lot of the game, so it was a good way to start the season.”
The Lady Indians are back in action on Thursday when they travel to Nicholasville to take on East Jessamine at 7 p.m.
