KIAC BASKETBALL: Mountaineers hold on to top Bulldogs

RICHMOND — The Mountaineers had a 23-point lead early in the second half Thursday at the Seabury Center and appeared to be on the way to an easy victory.

But, Wilberforce University (0-9) battled back.

The Bulldogs got back within five points with just less than two minutes left before Berea College (5-2) got back-to-back baskets and eventually pulled away for a 101-95 victory.

The Mountaineers had six players reach double figures in scoring, led by Diashon Robinson, who had 22 points, seven assists and six steals. Richard Parker had 20 points, Tevin Webster had 19 points on 9-of-11 shooting with seven rebounds and Seth Beckham had 14 points.

London Moore and Aaron Ponder both finished with 10 points.

Berea hit 31-of-44 free throws and shot 56 percent from the floor in the second half.

The Mountaineers forced 20 turnovers in a game that featured eight ties and four lead changes.

Berea had a 46-39 lead at halftime, but opened the second half on a 23-7 run.

The Bulldogs chipped away and got with 92-87 with 1:43 left. London Moore and Robinson both had baskets moments later that pushed the Berea lead back out to nine points.

The teams will play again at 6 p.m. today in Berea as part of the Rainmaker Classic.
