H.S. VOLLEYBALL: Scott County rolls past Lady Indians

BEREA — Elizabeth Morrow tried to hold back her emotions.

But, the tears came anyway.

After 14 seasons at the center of the Madison Central volleyball program, she coached her final game Tuesday at Madison Southern.

The Lady Indians had a lead at some point in all three sets, but suffered a 3-0 (25-8, 25-20, 25-12) loss to Scott County in the opening round of the 11th Region Tournament.

Morrow is the only coach the program has ever had.

“I’m looking forward to next year,” Morrow said. “I’ll be volunteering (with the team). I’ve been coaching volleyball since I was 22. It’s hard to give it up.”

Central claimed its first district title since 2006 by defeating Madison Southern in last week.

The Lady Indians were hoping to earn their first regional win on Tuesday and they got off to solid start.

A kill by senior Hayden Cremeens and a service winner by Riley Lane pulled Central even in the first set (7-7). Then Scott County reeled off 10 straight points on Chelsea Hackworth serves.

“(Libero) Kiara Clayton was off,” Morrow said. “Riley wasn’t feeling well. She was sick in the bathroom (before the game).”

The second set was tight throughout. Central took a 10-8 lead on two kills by Payton Templeton, then the Lady Cardinals began to pull away despite a kill by Cremeens and a service winner from Katie Stuart.

“We’ve got to start playing teams like that more.,” Morrow said. “We play Scott County. We play Woodford County. We play Henry Clay. We play Dunbar. We play Lafayette. We play these teams in tournaments.”

The Lady Indians seemed ready to battle back.

They jumped out to an 8-3 lead in the third set. Central later led 11-7.

Scott County ended the comeback by scoring 18 of the final 19 points of the match.

The Lady Cardinals advance to today’s semifinals to take on Tates Creek.
