K.K. Butler had 24 points and six rebounds as the Berea College women’s basketball team opened the season with a 95-85 win over Mid-Continent in Mayfield.
Johnesha Warren had 22 points and five steals as the Lady Mountaineers gave new coach Trent Milby a win in his first game at the school.
The game featured nine ties and 13 lead changes.
Mid-Continent had a 10-point lead mid-way through the second half. Berea had just a four-point lead with less than an minute left, but scored the final six points of the game on pair of free throws by both Warren and DeAnn Ryan and a basketball by Kaitlynne Smith.
Butler was nine-of-15 from the field, including a 5-of-8 performance from three-point range.
Berea shot 48 percent from the field and shot 52 percent in the second half.
The Lady Mountaineers were up 43-39 at halftime.
Ryan had nine points. Megan Walker added eight points and Erika Parks had six points.
Berea is set to return to action Saturday at home against Hiwassee College.
Berea men win
After falling Friday in the season opener, the Berea College men’s basketball team bounced back Saturday in Wilmore.
The Mountaineers topped Hiwassee College, 90-84, at the Asbury University Classic.
Berea is set to open the home portion of its schedule on Tuesday at the Seabury Center against Boyce College.
The Mountaineers will take on Milligan College Saturday on Homecoming.
