The Berea Community Lady Pirates (8-8) picked up a big 3-2 win over Southwestern (11-6-2) Thursday in their home finale.
The Lady Pirates played their best game of the season against a strong Lady Warrior squad, led by seniors Taylor Powell and Holly Musick
Powell had a huge night in the last home game of her career, scoring all three goals for the Lady Pirates, while Musick also went out in style, finishing with 18 saves in the game.
“This was a great win,” Berea coach Jerry Bingham said. “It is by far the best game we’ve played all year. I’m proud of them.”
Playing their first game in more than a week, the Lady Pirates withstood an early surge by the bigger and stronger Lady Warriors, who had numerous shots on goal stonewalled by Musick.
The game was scoreless until the 10-minute mark when Powell stole a pass from a Southwestern player then made a great move, faking out the goal keeper, before firing the ball into the right corner of the net to give Berea a 1-0 lead.
Southwestern tied that game eight minutes into the second half on the first of two Brandy Adams goals.
Adams’ second goal of the game put the Lady Warriors on top 2-1 with 24 minutes remaining.
But that’s when Powell and Musick took over the game.
Powell got the Lady Pirates even with a goal at the 15-minute mark.
Musick gobbled up several Southwestern shots on goal over the next six minutes to keep the game tied.
Then Powell recorded the hat trick with her third goal of the night — and the game winner — with 7:31 left in the contest.
“It had been almost two weeks since we had played so I didn’t know what to expect, but we played really, really well. I couldn’t be prouder of the way they hung in and didn’t quit after getting down,” Bingham said. “This was a great team win going into Monday. I’m so proud of the whole team.”
Berea takes on Madison Central at 6 p.m. Monday in the first game of the 44th District Tournament at Madison Southern.
