H.S. SOCCER: Central tops Southern, 3-1

RICHMOND — After Madison Central dominated most of the first half of Thursday’s district showdown in Richmond, the Eagles started to gain a little momentum after halftime.

Tanner Kidwell scored for Madison Southern less than eight minutes into the second half, slashing the Indians’ lead to just 2-1.

But, Central quickly re-gained a two-goal lead.

Two minutes later Dylan Dotson scored off a cross and the Indians went on to pick up a 3-1 win over Southern (4-2).

Luc Hall and Caleb Crutcher also scored for Central (4-1).

“We came out really composed and played really well in the first half,” Central coach Evan Sutherland said. “Then we gave up the goal, but I was really proud of our guys because we came back and took control the game. That’s what you want to see.”

The Indians got going early.

Senior midfielder Luc Hall walked through the left side of the box, dribbled past a series of defenders then slipped a shot into the net to give Central a 1-0 lead just 2:18 into the game.

“We are happy to have him back,” Sutherland said of Hall, who had been out with a shoulder injury. “We got him back on Tuesday for the first time. It was good to see him get a goal. He had three assists the other night. It’s good for us to have him back.”

With 10 minutes left in the half, Crutcher got open in front and was able to sneak a shot through Southern keeper Elijah Sexton for a 2-0 lead.

Ben Durham made that lead hold up until halftime. The senior keeper stopped Daylin Taylor on a point-blank opportunity with 3:53 left before the break.

Central is set to return to action Saturday at Bourbon County.

Southern is set to return to action Monday at Estill County.
