OVC FOOTBALL: Defense shines once again

RICHMOND — After turning in a dominant performance last week in the team’s first scrimmage, the EKU defense was even more impressive Saturday at Roy Kidd Stadium.

The defense didn’t allow a point in the first half and forced three interceptions — one of which Chris Kelly returned 21 yards for a touchdown.

The offense did find the end zone on back-to-back possessions in the second half, but the defense came up big on numerous occasions.

“The defense was just flying around,” EKU coach Dean Hood said. “From behind the offense, it seemed like sometimes there were 12 or 13 guys out there. That’s the way you want to attack (an offense). This time of year, you still expect the defense to be ahead of the offense.”

The EKU offense was without several key performers, including tight end Matt Lengel, running back J.J. Jude, wide receivers Jeff Glover and Jaucady Rutledge and offensive lineman Austin Jaggers.

On the second possession of the scrimmage, Kelly picked off a Kyle Romano pass and found his way into the end zone.

Junior safety Chris Owen picked off quarterback Barton Mann late in the first half and senior linebacker Anthony Brown made a big stop on fourth down just before the half.

Sophomore defensive back Trey Thomas made a diving interception of a Jared McClain pass in the second half.

McClain hit Devin Borders on a long pass play that set up the offense’s first touchdown. Senior fullback Roman Lawson scored from five yards out moments later.

Romano led the other scoring drive. He hit freshman Tranard Chester on a 29-yard pass that gave the offense first-and-goal. Thomas Owens scored on a five-yard run on the next play.

The Colonels are set to open the regular season Aug. 29 at home against Robert Morris.
