H.S. SOFTBALL: Lady Eagles top Danville for third-straight win

RICHMOND — The Lady Eagles let a victory slip away Friday night in the opening game of a tournament in Rockcastle County.

Since that disappointing loss, they have bounced back rather nicely.

Madison Southern finished out the two-day tournament with two lopsided wins on Saturday — 11-3 over Casey County and 10-2 over Wayne County. On Monday, the Lady Eagles (5-3) scored in every inning and topped Danville, 15-5, at home in six innings.

Tara Bord earned the complete-game victory, while Amber Sparks and Alex Nash each scored three times.

“Hopefully, they’ve realized they have to come to play every day. You can’t take anyone lightly," Southern coach Brian Foley said.

Danville took advantage of an error to score twice in the first inning. Southern pulled even moments later.

Bethany Mays reached on a bunt single and Jaycee Combs singled. Both runners scored on an error.

The Lady Eagles got a pair of runs in the second and third innings.

In the second, Mays had a two-run single and in the third, Briana Lanham had an RBI groundout and Paige King had an RBI bunt.

Southern added three runs in the fourth, highlighted by an RBI double by Sparks.

In the fifth, Lanham had a two-run double and in the sixth, Abby Nash had an RBI double.

“We are swinging the bat pretty well,” Foley said. “But, defense wins games. You have to score runs, but defense has to take care of things.”

Combs had two hits and scored three times, Bord walked twice, King had two singles and Alex Nash had three hits and scored three times.

Bord allowed two runs in the first, one run in the third and two more runs in the fifth inning.

“She bounced back,” Foley said of Bord’s rough first inning.

Southern is set to return to action today at Clark County.
