BOXING: Igo’s Boxing takes titles in Tennessee

RICHMOND — Six local boxers traveled to Johnson City, Tenn. Nov. 2, to represent Kentucky and Richmond against boxers from Georgia, Ohio and Tennessee.

Seasoned boxers Anthony Martin and Kegan Kavanaugh, both from Igo’s Boxing, came home with gold medals.

Martin dominated Noel Ulloa (Triple Boxing, Ga.) to win a 2-1 decision. Kavanaugh showed patience and skill against Jahosh Allen (Lima, Ohio), who spent the 1 1/2 rounds circling and running. Kavanaugh won a 2-1 split decision, using hooks to encourage Allen to an exciting third-round boxing bout.

One of the most exciting bouts of the evening was newcomer Destani Alverado (Igo’s Boxing) against Mary Kate Rush (Johnson City, Tenn). Rush managed an eight-count and a bloody nose against Alverado in the first round, which only seemed to fuel Alverado to come back with a flurry of solid rights. She snapped her head back and returned every punch thrown by Rush with punches of her own.

Alverado continued punishing Rush with right hands until the referee gave Rush an eight-count. Unfortunately, she lost a close bout on a 2-1 decision but came home with the “Best Novice Bout Of The Night” award.

Other boxers competing were Josiah Sgro, Thomas Deck, and Gentry Deck.

Kenyen Rettig (Lima, Ohio) won on retirement over Sgro (Igo’s Boxing) in the middle of the second round. Brian Blake (Augusta, Ga.) won a 2-1 decision over Thomas Deck (Igo’s Boxing), while Gentry Deck lost a 2-1 decision to Nasir Shabazz (Triple Boxing, Ga.).
