KIAC HOOPS: Mountaineers fall short in season opener

WILMORE — Daishon Robinson scored 20 points, but the Berea College men’s basketball team fell short in its season opener Friday in Wilmore.

Lindenwood University-Belleville used a late surge to pick up a 92-85 win over the Mountaineers at the Asbury Tip-off Classic.

Aaron Ponder had 14 points for Berea, while Tevin Webster added 12 points and 16 rebounds.

The Mountaineers had a 25-12 lead in the first half before the Lynx took a 45-37 advantage into halftime.

The game was tied at 73 in the second half.

Berea was 12-of-33 from three-point range, while Lindenwood was 10-of-23. Robinson and Ponder each hit a trio of three-pointers for the Mountaineers.

Trent Maddox and London Moore each had nine points for Berea, while Richard Parker and Tyler Huff added five points each. Jalen Simmons and Seth Beckham had four points each and Anthony Myrks had three points.

Berea shot just 38 percent from the floor, while the Lynx shot 51 percent.

The Mountaineers (0-1) are set to return to action at 2 p.m. today in Asbury against Hiwassee College.
