EKU basketball fans will get their first opportunity to check out the 2013-2014 men’s and women’s teams today at the annual Basketball Hoopfest at McBrayer Arena.
The event will feature free pizza and t-shirts, while a lucky student will win a $300 shopping spree and free pizza for a semester.
There will also be a three-point shooting contest, a dunk contest, the introduction of both teams and an autograph session for fans.
The doors open at 6 p.m.
The event is free to the public.
The EKU men’s team is picked by nearly every media organization to win the Ohio Valley Conference this year and make the program’s third NCAA Tournament appearance since 2005. Fans will also get a chance to see a Lady Colonel team coming off an 18-win season and a postseason tournament appearance, featuring all-conference performer Marie Carpenter.
The dunk contest will feature senior Marcus Lewis, who was recently ranked No. 5 on the NBC Sports College Basketball Talk Top-20 Dunkers list.
Lewis’ alley-oop dunk at Southeast Missouri last season climbed to No. 3 on ESPN’s SportsCenter Top 10, was a finalist for GEICO Play of the Year and advanced to the finals of the HoopsManefesto.com Dunk of the Year Tournament.
The Streamwood, Ill., native had another spectacular dunk against Crowley’s Ridge College three days later. Both dunks featured precision passes from teammate Glenn Cosey, including a behind-the-back pass while going out of bounds at half court against Crowley’s Ridge.
Four starters and a total of 13 letter winners return from the 2012-13 squad that won a school-record 25 games and posted the second-best conference mark at 12-4. The Colonels advanced to the CollegeInsider.com Tournament (CIT) and picked up the program’s first victory in a national postseason tournament game in 68 years.
