H.S. SOCCER: Rematches to decide district finals

RICHMOND — The championship games of this year’s 44th District Soccer Tournaments will both be rematches of last season’s games.

Madison Central and Madison Southern are set to battle again for the girls championship, while Model Laboratory and Madison Southern will meet again in the boys final.

The boys game is scheduled for 6:30 p.m., while the girls game is set for 8:30 p.m.

Both games will be played at Madison Southern High School.

Boys title game

Model Laboratory is seeking its third-straight boys district championship. The Patriots (16-1) had little trouble rolling past Berea Tuesday in the semifinals.

Model got two goals each from Andrew Wylie and Alex Clawson and a goal each from Jack Frisbie, Noah Valencia, Brandon Gentry, Chase Land and Marlowe Smith in a 10-0 win.

The Patriots have won eight-straight games and have out-scored their opponents 72-1 during that streak.

Wylie has a team-best 50 goals for the Patriots this season, while Valencia has 26 goals.

Madison Southern (13-4-1) has lost just once in the past month.

Still, the Eagles needed a shootout win over Madison Central to get back to the championship game for the second-straight year. Southern took the shootout, 3-2, with Tanner Kidwell providing the deciding goal. Elijah Sexton made a save on the final shot to secure the win for the Eagles.

Model defeated Southern 4-3 in last year’s title game at Madison Central.

Southern has not won a district tournament title since 2005.

Girls title game

Madison Southern (7-10-2) and Madison Central (13-3-1) have met in the finals of the district tournament in each of the past two years.

And both games have been decided in shootouts.

Southern took the title in 2011 and Central claimed the championship last year.

The rivals are set meet again today in the final at Madison Southern.

Both teams rolled into the championship game with easy wins on Monday in Berea. Central defeated Berea, 6-0, while Southern defeated Model, 6-0.

The long-time rivals met once during the regular-season. Central picked up a 4-1 win Sept. 18 in Richmond. Leeanne Ogle had two goals, while Dani Parsley and Ellie Wright. Rachel Ramey scored for Southern.
