H.S. SOCCER: Lady Patriots snap skid, top Somerset 3-0, Patriots down GRC 2-0

RICHMOND — After watching his team struggled the past few weeks, Model coach Michael Bailey decided to shake things up prior to Thursday’s regular-season against Somerset in Richmond.

“We made some changes. We benched some starters,” Bailey said. “I think we were getting complacent. It wasn’t about their skills or their abilities or anything like that. I just thought if we made some changes, we would get a little more energy. And we did.”

The changes worked.

The Lady Patriots (6-11-2) got a pair of goals from Brooke Roberts and a score from Natasha Harrison and rolled to a 3-0 win.

The victory snapped a five-game winless streak.

Ruby Smith also had two assists for Model and Hayley Hunt earn the shutout in goal.

“If I had 14 gameballs tonight, I could have given out 14 gameballs,” Bailey said. “I think the energy level was awesome. I can’t think of any player who didn’t have a great game.”

Roberts gave Model a 1-0 lead with 28:30 left in the first half on an assist by Rachel Short.

The Briar Jumpers had several chances to pull even before the half, but Hunt made the lead stand up.

Bailey went with his regular lineup at the start of the second half and the Lady Patriots dominated possession most of the rest of the way.

Roberts scored off an assist from Smith just nine minutes into the second half, then Harrison scored off a corner from Smith with 17:14 left in the game.

“They brought a new energy,” Bailey said of starters in the second half. “They were a little more into it. I think it was a wake-up call.”

Model is set to open 44th District Tournament play Monday against Madison Southern at 8 p.m. at Madison Southern.

Model 2, Clark County 0

The Patriots wrapped up the regular season with a 2-0 win Thursday at Clark County.

The win was the seventh-straight for Model (15-1). During that streak, the Patriots have out-scored their opponents, 62-1.

Andrew Wylie scored for the Patriots 23 minutes into the game and Noah Valencia scored will 11 minutes left in the game on an assist from Marlowe Smith.

Wylie now has 46 goals on the season.

Levi Agee earned the shutout victory in goal.

Model will take on Berea Tuesday at Madison Southern in the opening round of the 44th District Tournament.
