OVC HOOPS: Standout guard Norl picks EKU

RICHMOND — EKU basketball coach Jeff Neubauer and the Colonels received a verbal commitment Monday from 6-foot-2 sharp-shooting guard Daniel Norl of Clarksville Tenn.

Norl, a senior at Kenwood High School, chose the Colonels over OVC rivals, Belmont, Austin Peay and Murray, as well as Lehigh and Western Kentucky.

As a junior, Norl averaged 18 points while shooting 45 percent from behind the three-point line and 80 percent from the free throw stripe.

Kenwood coach John Stigall called Norl a perfect fit for EKU’s three-point shooting offense and in-your-face defensive style of play.

“Daniel is a very athletic player and he can definitely shoot the ball. He is not a point guard, but he can handle the ball well enough he can play that position if needed as well,” Stigall said. “When he talked with the EKU coaches he felt very comfortable with them and with the system. I think he fits their style of play to a tee.”

Although he comes to EKU with a reputation as an outstanding outside shooter, Stigall said Norl might be an even better defensive player.

“He puts a lot of pressure on the ball. He is a strong kid, but more than anything he is a willing defender. He has no ego as far as getting down and doing the dirty work,” Stigall said. “I really think he can defend multiple positions at the college level, point guard, the two or even the three if he is given the chance.”

Norl excels in the classroom as well as on the basketball floor, sporting a 3.8 grade point average.

Stigall called Norl a class act and a real gem that Colonel fans will enjoy watching for the four years.

“Daniel’s just a top-notch kid all the way around that does everything the right way. He’s unselfish and an extremely hard worker, both in the gym and in the classroom,” Stigall said. “They are going to be getting a really, really good basketball player. He’s going to be a prize no doubt.”
