Special to the Register

RICHMOND — Sophomore catcher Katie Tackett blasted a three-run home run in the first inning to help the Eastern Kentucky University  softball team beat Tennessee State, 5-3, Sunday at Gertrude Hood Field.

The Colonels (26-16, 13-4 OVC) swept the three-game series with the Tigers (11-30, 2-13) and have won seven-straight conference games.

EKU is in first place in the OVC Eastern Division and has the third-best winning percentage in the league (Eastern Illinois —  15-2, SIUE — 14-2).

Tennessee State hung around all game and closed the gap to 4-3 in the third on an Audrey Sensing two-run single.

EKU added an insurance run in the bottom of the third behind junior Christina Ciolek’s RBI groundout.

Sophomore pitcher Leanna Pittsenbarger (16-8) came on in the top of the fourth inning and limited Tennessee State to one hit the final four innings. Pittsenbarger struck out six Tigers, including  the side in the seventh to secure the win.

Tackett finished the game 2-for-3 and hit a home run in all three games over the weekend. She now leads the team with 10 homers.

EKU is back in action next weekend with a pair of road doubleheaders at Southeast Missouri (April 20) and UT Martin (April 21).
