The Model Laboratory tennis team picked up two victories against top-notch competition Saturday at the Kentucky Duals in Louisville.
The event, which is hosted by St. Xavier, is open to only the top eight ranked teams in the state. The squads compete in a college-format team tournament.
Model faced Lone Oak, a state finalist last season, in the opening match and suffered a 6-3 loss.
The Patriots bounced back and picked up victories against Covington Catholic and DuPont Manual.
Model finished fifth at the event, the team’s best showing in the two-year history of the tournament.
“This team gutted out some great matches,” Model coach Ric Hernandez said. “They refused to lay down when the chips were down.”
In the loss to Lone Oak, Model got singles wins from Gus Benson — 7-6 (10), 7-5 over Matt Townsend — and James Logue — 6-2, 6-4 over Tommy Hagan — but lost two of three doubles matches.
Benson and Cole Wilson defeated Hagan and Landon Davis, 8-6, at No. 1 doubles.
At No. 6 singles, Wilson won the first set, but lost in a third-set tiebreaker.
Against Covington Catholic, last year’s Region 9 Champion, the Patriots earned a dramatic victory, 6-3.
Frisbie, Logue and Wilson all won in third-set tiebreakers, while Benson rolled to an easy win at No. 1 singles. Frisbie and Wilson lost the first set before rallying for victories.
In doubles, Benson and Wilson picked up an 8-3 win, while Frisbie and Logue earned an 8-4 victory.
In the final match of the day, the Patriots faced Manual, which defeated them last year at the same event.
Model got singles wins from Benson (6-2, 6-4), Frisbie (6-2, 6-2), Nolan Kelley (6-4, 6-0) and Wilson (6-1, 6-2) and got a doubles victory from Benson and Wilson on the way to a 6-3 win.
Benson won all three of his singles matches without losing a set and also teamed up with Wilson to win all three of their doubles matches.
Model is set to return to action Tuesday at Arlington Country Club against No. 4 Henry Clay, last year’s 11th Region champion.
