WOMEN'S HOOPS: Butler, Walker back to lead Lady Mountaineers this season

Register Staff Report

RICHMOND — The Berea College women’s basketball team won just eight games last season and was knocked out in the first round of the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament.

But, there is reason for optimism as the Lady Mountaineers (8-20, 4-7 KIAC) are set to begin the 2012-2013 season.

Berea College is set to return three of its top five scorers from last season and it top rebounder from last season. In addition, the Lady Mountaineers have added two transfers to a roster that only includes one senior.

Berea will open the season at 8 p.m. today at the Seabury Center against Northwestern Ohio.

Sophomore Katelyn Butler (Memphis) led the team in scoring last season at 9.6 points a game. A 5-foot-8 guard, Butler started 14 games and averaged 23 minutes a contest, while finishing with a team-best 22 three-pointers.

Also back from last year is Meagan Walker. The 5-foot-8 sophomore forward from Frankfort led the Lady Mountaineers in rebounding last season (6.5 boards a game) and was fifth in scoring (7.71 points a game).

Junior forward Shelby Romine (Mount Washington) averaged 25 minutes, 7.79  points (third on team) and 6.3 rebounds (third-best on team) a game last year.

Berea will also get back senior guard Makenzie Stoner (Lawrenceburg) and sophomore guard Stephanie Householder (Dixon). Both played during the 2010-11 season but were not major contributors last year.

Stoner was limited by a commitment to academic coursework last season and Householder was lost to a season-ending leg injury during the preseason.

Junior guard Victoria Cox (Birmingham, Ala.), Erika Parks (Richmond — Madison Central), Malena Steve (Birmingham, Ala.) and Carissa Overbay also return for the 2012-13 campaign.

Additions to the 2012-2013 team include 6-foot junior transfer Kaitlynne Smith (Kokomo, Ind.), 6-foot freshman forward Anna Loveless (Saint Louis) and three guards — sophomore transfer Johnesha Warren (Milton, Del.), DeAnn Ryann (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Mikola Burks (Covington, Ga.).
