MADISON COUNTY —
Berea Community swept a doubleheader from Brown Monday, with the Lady Pirates winning 60-37 and the Pirates downing the Bears 70-54.
Leading 30-20 at the half, the Lady Pirates (14-9) took control of the game in the third quarter.
Back-to-back baskets by Victoria Sexton ignited an 11-2 run by the Lady Pirates to begin the quarter.
Taylor Powell, Jordan Sandefur and Alex Horn all scored during the run, as Berea upped its lead to 41-22.
Back-to-back baskets by Sandefur and Powell gave the Lady Pirates a commanding 47-30 lead at the end of the third quarter.
Sandefur scored the first six points of the fourth quarter, then a basket by Holly Musick gave the Lady Pirates a 55-30 lead with five minutes remaining before Berea coach Jerry Bingham cleared his bench.
The Lady Pirates were once again playing without injured seniors Hannah Haycraft and Ashley Sizemore, the team’s leading rebounder and leading defender, but Bingham said he was pleased with how other players have filled in during their absence.
“We’re happy to get a win after a four-game losing streak,” Bingham said. “The main thing right now is to get healthy. But we have developed some kids off the bench while we’ve had some kids hurt. They are still a little unsure of themselves at times, but it’s coming along.”
Sandefur lead three Lady Pirates in double figures with a game-high 26 points. Sexton and Chase Fain finished with 11 points each, while Musick had five points, Powell had four, Mckenzie Perry added three and Alex Horn had two points.
“It was a good win and we’ll take and try to get better in the next two weeks before the tournament,” Bingham said.
The Lady Pirates are back in action at home on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. against Paris.
