OVC HOOPS: EKU looking to bounce back, Lady Colonels trying for third straight win

RICHMOND — The Colonels (16-6, 6-3 OVC) will be looking to bounce back from Thursday’s loss to UT-Martin and stop a two-game losing streak when they take on Southeast Missouri State (11-2, 3-6 OVC) today at 6:30 p.m. in Cape Girardeau, Mo.

The game can be heard on WCYO 100.7 FM and on EKUSports.com and seen online at OVCDigitalNetwork.com.

The Colonels are coming off a disappointing 72-65 loss to UT-Martin on Thursday in which they struggled from the outside against the Skyhawks’ zone defense and were almost doubled up on the backboards.

The Colonels did have some good news though as junior Glenn Cosey returned to action after missing six games due to a hand injury.

Cosey hit six three pointers and had a team-high 20 points, four assists and no turnovers in 33 minutes of play.

The Colonels also had a season-low five turnovers against Martin.

SEMO is coming off a 78-72 loss to Eastern Illinois and has dropped six of its past seven games.

The Redhawks are fifth in the OVC in scoring offense at 71.3 points per game, but they are giving up 70.5 points per game to their opponents.

Tyler Stone leads the Redhawks with 16.3 points per game and is also pulling down 8.4 rebounds per game.

Corey Wilford is second on the team in scoring at 14 points per game, while Nino Johnson is averaging 11.3 points and 8.7 rebounds per game for SEMO.

The Colonels has won eight straight games against SEMO, but the Redhawks have knocked EKU from the OVC Tournament each of the past two years.

EKU leads the all-tine series 23-19 and has won three straight and four of the last five in Cape Girardeau.

Lady Colonels

The Lady Colonels (12-7, 6-2 OVC) hit the road for their next three games, beginning with today’s 4 p.m. tilt against Southeast Missouri (8-13, 2-6 OVC) then continuing Monday at UT-Martin and Saturday, Feb. 9 at Morehead State.

Today’s game can be heard on WEKY AM 1340 and online at www.EKUsports.com. It can be seen live online at www.OVCDigitalNetwork.com.

EKU is coming off home victories over OVC East Division leader Belmont, 55-51, and Tennessee State, 62-54, last week. The Lady Colonels are currently in second place in the East Division.

Senior Alex Jones led EKU in the win over Belmont with her 31st career double-double, scoring 11 points and pulling down 12 rebounds. Jones needs 10 more rebounds to move into third place on the all-time rebounding list.

Fellow senior Jade Barber led the way against Tennessee State with a game-high 15 points and 15 rebounds.

Barber leads the OVC in rebounding, averaging 10.8 per game, while Jones is fifth, pulling down an average of 8.7 rebounds per game.

The two have a chance to become the first Lady Colonel teammates to ever grab more than 250 rebounds each in the same season.

Barber leads the team in scoring at 13 points per game, followed by Marie Carpenter at 10.9 points per game and Brittany Coles at 10.1 points per game.

Raechele Gray is averaging 9.4 points and 4.4 assists per game, while Jones is averaging 8.6 points per game.

SEMO enters the game having lost its past five conference contests after winning two of its first three OVC games.

Bailie Roberts leads the Lady Redhawks with an average of 11 points per game, while Jordan Hunter is second, averaging 10.3 points per game.

The Lady Colonels are 27-15 all-time against the Lady Redhawks and won the last game between the two 52-37 on Jan. 7 last year in Richmond.
