Special to the Register
Eastern Kentucky University freshman Mads Taersboel has been named the adidas Ohio Valley Conference Male Track Athlete of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday.
Taersboel exploded on the scene last weekend at the Rod McCravy Memorial Meet in Lexington, finishing second out of 44 runners in his first-ever race in the men’s mile with a time of 4:05.31. His time is now tops in the OVC this winter and currently the 37th-fastest indoor mile time in the country. It is also the fifth-fastest indoor mile time in EKU history. Taersboel edged All-American and EKU indoor mile record holder Soufiane Bouchikhi by just over a second in Saturday’s race to earn this week’s honor.
Taersboel, a native of Slagelse, Denmark, was injured through much of the early part of the cross country season last fall, but came on strong on at the end, earning first team All-OVC honors at the OVC Cross Country Championships and finishing fifth on the team at the NCAA Championships.
A different EKU miler has been named Male Track Athlete of the Week every week of the indoor season.
