KIAC BASKETBALL: Mountaineers battle past Point Park, 96-90

RICHMOND — The Berea College men’s basketball team stayed undefeated in league play with a hard-fought 96-90 win at the Seabury Center over Point Park College.

Seth Beckham had 23 points and five rebounds, and Aaron Ponder had 21 points and seven rebounds as the Mountaineers (10-7, 2-0 Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) won their third-straight game.

Tevin Webster had 14 points and 10 rebounds for Berea. Tyler Huff added eight points and 14 rebounds. Trent Maddox had nine assists and Koty Riley added eight points.

The Mountaineers opened KIAC player Tuesday with a 72-69 win in overtime at Alice Lloyd. Ponder had 24 points, Rashad Hayden had 14 points and Beckham had 12 points.

Berea had a 12-point lead against Point Park just before halftime and took a 48-36 lead into halftime. The Mountaineers shot just shot 38 percent in the second half, but sealed the win at the free throw line.

Berea hit 32-of-40 free throws in the game, including 21-of-27 in the second half. Ponder was 10-of-12 from the line as nine Mountaineers hit at least one shot from the line.

Hayden had six points, Bryce Carlton and Dominique Garmon had five points each and Deon Banks had two points.

Berea is set to return to action at 4 p.m. today at home against KIAC rival Brescia.

Point Park 62, Lady Mountaineers 41

The Lady Mountaineers shot just 25 percent and suffered a 62-41 loss at home Friday to KIAC rival Point Park.

Berea slips to 4-12 overall and 0-3 in the conference with the loss.

Mikola Burks had 11 points and Malena Steve had 10 points for Berea. Meagan Walker added 13 rebounds and six points.

The Lady Mountaineers trailed the entire game and were down 30-21 at halftime. Berea shot 20.6 percent from the field in the second half and was only six-of-11 from the free throw line for the game.

Berea is set to return to action at 2 p.m. today against KIAC rival Carlow University.
