The Eastern Kentucky University baseball team lost 13-1 at No. 7 University of Louisville on Wednesday.
The Colonels (1-3) scored first, but the Cardinals (3-1) then scored 13 unanswered. Kyle Nowlin led off the game with a single up the middle and Doug Teegarden followed with a double down the left field line. Consecutive groundouts were enough to stake EKU to an early 1-0 lead.
UofL took the lead in the bottom of the second. With the bases loaded and one out, Alex Chittenden drove in a pair with a single through the left side. The Cardinals added six more in the third, including a three-run home run by Shane Crain.
Louisville scored five more in the sixth inning.
Teegarden finished 2-for-2, his first multi-hit game of the season. Nowlin had one hit in three at bats. Chittenden was 2-for-3 with a run and two RBIs for Louisville. Zach Lucks went 2-for-4 with two runs and four RBIs.
Matt Lynch (0-1) started for the Colonels and allowed five runs on five hits in two innings. Ben Brooks, Alex Hamilton and Cody Creamer combined for four innings of scoreless relief. Zack Burdi (1-0) garnered the win after holding EKU hitless and scoreless for two innings of relief. Jake Sparger started and allowed one run on four hits in four innings.
The Colonels’ stretch against nationally ranked teams continues this weekend with a three-game series at No. 5 South Carolina. The series-opener in Columbia is scheduled for 3 p.m. Friday.
