OVC BASEBALL: EKU tops Marshall to end eight-game losing streak

RICHMOND — It’s been a rough start to the season for the Colonels.

But, with more than half of the schedule still to be played, including most of the team’s Ohio Valley Conference games, EKU coach Jason Stein remains very optimistic about his squad.

“There’s still a ton of baseball left to be played and we still have our goals in front of us,” Stein said. “We make that (OVC) tournament and anything can happen.”

The Colonels took a big step toward getting back on track Wednesday at Turkey Hughes Field.

EKU (6-19, 2-7 OVC) got a pair of RBIs from both Kenny Hostrander and Doug Teegarden and rolled to a 10-3 win over Marshall. The victory snapped an eight-game losing streak.

The Colonels had not won since March 16.

Freshman Eric Nerl (1-1) started and went three innings, allowing just three hits, while striking out two and earning the win.

The Colonels scored twice in the third and took control with a five-run fourth inning.

“We were more aggressive today,” Stein said. “We didn’t get many hits, but we were more aggressive. We were more aggressive on the mound. We were more aggressive running the bases. We were more aggressive at the plate. That’s why we were able to build onto our lead.”

Trey Salisbury pitched three innings, allowing one hit and three walks and Nick Bozman pitched the final three innings, giving up three runs (two earned) and three hits, while earning the save.

Marshall scored once in the eighth and twice in the ninth.

“They threw strikes,” Stein said of his pitchers. “Some of these guys had gotten a lot of looks. Trey and Nick hadn’t seen a lot of work. They came in and threw strikes and that was what we were looking for.”

With the bases loaded and two outs in the third, Teegarden hit a grounder to first  base, but Nathan Gomez dropped the ball and two runs came home on the error.

With two outs and the bases loaded in the fourth, Kenny Hostrander singled to left center. Two runs scored on the hit and another came home on a Marshall throwing error.

After a walk, Teegarden made it 7-0 with a two-run double to right field.

In the seventh, Shaun Ball drove in a run with a single to right field. Bryan Soloman’s sacrifice fly scored Teegarden from third and a throwing error let another runner score.

Marshall finished with more hits than EKU (7-6), but six Colonels had one hit each. Hostrander finished 1-for-5 with a run scored and two RBI. Teegarden went 1-for-3 with a run and two RBI and Sean Hagen went 0-for-2 but walked three times and scored twice.

Kolin Stanley (0-1) suffered the loss after giving up two runs in one inning of work.

EKU is set to jump back into OVC play this weekend at long-time rival Morehead State. The three-game series is set to get under way Friday.

“That’s what I told (the guys), that hopefully this momentum will carry into the weekend,” Stein said.
