H.S. BASEBALL: Patriots come up just short

RICHMOND — The Patriots ran out of time to put together a comeback Friday in their first home game of the season.

Model Laboratory fell to Whitley County, 8-7, at EKU’s Turkey Hughes Field in a game that was called because of darkness in the top of the sixth inning.

Model had a 6-1 lead after two innings, but the Colonels scored five times in the third and two more times in the fourth.

With the loss, Model slips to 0-3 on the season.

Jesse Middleton reached base three times and had two singles and scored twice, Tyler Thornsberry had two hits and scored a run, while Jared Adams also had two hits and scored a run.

Freshman Seth Marks started and went two-plus innings. Joseph Hampton pitched two innings before Middleton come on in the fifth.

Model took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Ray White was hit by a pitch and scored on a groundout by Joseph Hampton.

In the second inning, Trey Baker, Thornsberry and Adams all singled and came around to score. A.J. Hammons reached on a fielder’s choice and scored and White reached on an error and also scored.

In the fourth, Middleton singled and scored on a Cody Jones single.

Model is set to return to action today at Garrard County.
