Southern, Central wrestlers take titles

RICHMOND — Two Madison County wrestlers earned individual titles Saturday at the Tates Creek Invitational in Lexington.

Madison Southern’s Justus Williams took first place in the 195 pound weight class and Madison Central’s Chris Morrow took first place in the 134 pound weight class.

Madison Southern finished sixth out of 15 teams, while Madison Central was seventh.

The result was one of the best in the three-year history of the Southern wrestling program. The Eagles had just seven athletes compete in the tournament, but five of them received medals.

“That’s our best finish in a big event,” Southern coach Brian Bertrand said. “I am very pleased.”

Jake Power posted a 4-1 record for Southern and finished third in the 126 pound weight class. Hutch Howard was 2-2 and finished third in the 220 pound weight class. Fatu Sevelo (182) and Jonathan Todd (170) both finished fourth in their weight classes, while Jae Durham posted a 4-1 record and took fifth place and Richard Willoughby went 2-2 and took seventh place in the 145 pound weight class.

Southern is set to return to action Saturday at Bryan Station.

Central had four wrestlers earn medals at the meet.

Will Keeney (106), Austin Isaacs (113) and Ryan McMannis (120) all took third place in their weight classes. Gavin Williams (160), Corbin Couch (285) and Jack Lindsay (170) all had fifth-place finishes in their weight classes and Jim Morris (138) finished sixth in his weight class.

Central is set to return to action Saturday in Richmond.
